Santispac Beach Days

Well we have spent one glorious week at Santispac beach on Bahia Conception with more to come! We stopped for gas on our way here, $0.95 per litre, and bought our first batch of fish & shrimp ceviche from a guy in a truck, delicious.
We have set up our wind screens in our palapa and Robin has his "outdoor kitchen", one of the things we miss from Penticton. As we drove down onto the beach we realized that we knew 5 of the RVers here from last year, nice to catch up with old friends. We all discussed the strange boat out in the bay - resembled a stealth bomber, supposedly a very fast boat owned by a very rich Italian.

The weather has been less than stellar, clouds & windy, but still wearing shorts. We have been out kayaking several times around the islands, saw a strange " upside down" tree, lots of birds up close, islands almost white from roosting birds, tropical fish, rays & starfish. We tried fishing out around the islands but no luck. We have used the kayak to collect firewood, hoping that no critters crawl out onto us as we are crammed in the kayak trying to paddle back home.

We drove along the bay to Requeson beach where we had great luck digging for small clams. Our first trip resulted in 10 pounds of clams, we were so excited we were ready to invite the whole campground for happy hour - luckily we realized that there isn't a whole lot of meat in one clam, so we saved 1 cup for clam chowder ( excellent), then invited two neighbours for clams & beers. We, of course, had to return & proceed to dig another 15 lbs, which provided lunch & 2 bags into the freezer for more chowder.

We have the usual beach vendors, so far we have bought fresh scallops, lobster ($28 for 1 kilo, veggies, eggs & fruit. The fruit & veggie truck has produce fresher than Safeway & probably cheaper. The "souvenir" guys have a harder time to make a sale, they often spread their wares all over the sand, bringing out "more colors, more sizes, maybe a salsa bowl?, maybe maƱana?"

We have gone into Mulege a couple times, the only way to get internet, tried FaceTime with the kids, not a great connection, plus we aren't that technically inclined, we still aren't sure where our microphone is. It was really great to actually see them & Shane showed us the snow, so we shan't complain about a bit of clouds. I actually got Robin to go to an art & craft show in town, some amazing work and the artist's yard was beautifully landscaped with cacti & shells.

Life around camp is simple, relaxing, sunbathing, happy hours. We have used our pop up tent/ shower room with the plastic solar water bags, works pretty well. At the moment we are enjoying some lively Mexican music from a family here  also " playing" on the beach. Friday evening we had dinner at the beach restaurant that is directly behind us across the driveway, a weekly special complete with a DJ, light show & dancing on their new concrete floor.

Saturday we tried fishing in the mangrove cove at the end of our beach - we paddled into it and within an hour I had caught 2 corvina. Still not tired of fish & seafood! We spent the evening at a group campfire, catching up with friends from last year. We aren't sure how much longer we will stay here, still areas to kayak, fish to catch, clams to dig and maybe some more hiking (or sitting in the sun being lazy).

Amazing experience yesterday morning -we saw dolphins out in the bay, so quickly jumped into the kayak & paddled into their midst. Probably close to 30, including at least one mama & baby. They followed us, kind of freaky as you could hear them coming up behind us, quietly snorting. We spent half an hour floating around watching them all around us - this alone was worth the cost of the kayak.

Another day in paradise!

  1. HI Good to read your post. Must of been amazing to be that close to the dolphins. Do you have a final destination. Must be hard to move camp when everything looks so ideal. Love the outdoor kitchen. Bill and Vals trailer has a 2 burner propane stove that pulls out of the side. A must have in your next unit. CHEERS PAT

  3. Wow you two have been busy! Sooo jealous of all the yummy fresh seafood you are enjoying! Great pics of the dolphins, how cool to be able to see them up so close in the wild! Outdoor kitchen looks great Robin, so much nicer to cook outside! Had a chuckle over the firewood camouflage kayak. You've definitely become experienced in kayak, paddling with those loads! Nice to hear you have some familiar faces around makes the trip that much better. Soak up some sun for us!

  4. Hello both.

Still following you. It looks good. We are not suprised that Robon has done an outdoor kitchen, when we are thinking og the grill that was found and used when we was travelling with the motorhome here in Norway in Sogn. We whish you both a merry Christmas and a happy new year when comeing up.
Take good care both. May and Olav
